Learning Texas Holdem for the first time can be confusing. Never has a game had so many terminologies. This Texas Holdem Poker Guide aims to let beginners understand game rules and hand rankings and game sequences deeper.

Texas Holdem Poker Guide - The Game's Objective

The objective in Texas Holdem is for players to form a five card combination out of the two hole cards and the five community cards. The player who makes the strongest hand wins the game and of course, the pot.

A poker hand is a five card combination that players make by either combining the hole and community cards or by making use of the community cards solely. The pot is the prize money, the sum of all the bets the players have made in the course of the game.

The game starts when all players are dealt hole or individual cards. These are two cards dealt face down to every player.

The pre flop or first round of betting ensues where players can opt to raise, call or fold. Simply put, to raise means to increase the bet amount and asking other players to do the same, to call is to match this amount and to fold is to leave the game.

Leaving the game however, means that you are relinquishing all you chances to win the pot.

After the pre-flop, a burn card is discarded from the top of the card deck and three community cards are drawn. These community cards are called the flop and must be dealt face up and placed in plain sight.

Community, shared or board cards are cards that all players can use to combine with their hole cards to create a strong poker hand. Burn cards are cards that are taken from the top of the deck and excluded from the game to ensure that there is no cheating.

The flop is followed by a second round of betting, then another burn card taken and a fourth community card, drawn. This fourth community card is called the turn.

The process repeats itself again with one more betting round, one more burn card and one last community card. This fifth card is called, the river.

The game ends with all players comparing their poker hands. This is called a showdown and the player with the highest hand ranking, wins.

Texas Holdem Poker Guide - All The Different Hands

Here are the hands that Holdem players strive to create. We start with the weakest one and end with the unbeatable Royal Flush. This list is order meaning, the hand that follows beat the one prior to it.

1. High Card - this is the card combination that cannot be classified into any of the hand below. When two players hold the same hand, the higher ranking card wins.

2. One Pair - as the name suggests, this combination contains one pair of cards that are of the same rank plus three kickers.

3. Two Pair - these are two pairs of cards that are of the same rank and one unrelated side card.

4. Three of a Kind - these are three cards of equal rank plus two unrelated side cards or kickers.

5. Straight - these are five cards in a sequence but are of different suits

6. Flush - these are five cards in the same suit

7. Full House - this is comprised of two sets. A set of three cards and a set of two. Both set contain cards of equal rank.

8. Four of a Kind - these are cards of the same rank with one side cards or kicker

9. Straight Flush - these are five cards in a series and of the same suit

10.Royal Flush - nothing beats this hand. It consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten in the same suit
